Little ones learn the yoga basics at kindy

Te Awamutu Courier - - News -

Every Wednesday is yoga day for the children and staff at Central Kids Kindergarten Hazelmere.

Yoga teachers Renee Page and Di Johnston, from Te Awamutu studio Yoga & Oils, run an optional weekly yoga class at the kindergarten.

The 20-minute session uses narrative techniques to teach basic moves like the tree pose and the downward-facing dog.

Renee says the moves are mostly based on stories about nature, weather and animals.

“We keep it really simple without any spiritual aspects.”

“The moves bring a little bit of stillness into their world.”

Kindergarten head teacher Tina Singh says yoga is a wonderful skill for the children to learn.

“It teaches mindfulness and allows the children to slow down, relax and feel safe.”

“This skill helps them cope when things get stressful and pressured.”

Tina says the children embrace the class, listen and follow instructions.

“They leave the class feeling calm and carry that feeling with them for the day.”

Tina says she is grateful to Renee and Di for volunteering their time.
