Football loss ends TA’s four game win streak
Matamata ended Te Awamutu’s four game winning streak in Waibop Football premiership with a 2-1 victory at the Matamata Domain.
The Edmonds Judd sponsored Te Awamutu team went into Saturday’s game keen to avenge the 4-0 loss to the hosts in their earlier season encounter.
Coach Joe Gifford reports that his side battled hard all game long and narrowly missed securing a point out of the game when a half-volley shot from Steffan Foulkes crashed against the crossbar.
Instead, the team only had a single goal from Foulkes to show for their efforts.
Matamata struck early through Brayden Lissington, then doubled their lead with 20 minutes left when Jamie Baxter scored from the penalty spot.
Trailing 2-0 deep into the second half, Thomas Gifford, in his first game for the Prems since returning from injury, linked with midfielder Theo Petropolos before sending a perfectly weighted cross for Foulkes to latch on to and head the ball past the keeper at the near post.
Foulkes’ goal was small consolation in a match they probably should have taken a point from.
In the end one defensive mistake and a penalty kick was all it took for Matamata to take their scoring chances as well as all three competition points on offer.
Te Awamutu defender Richard Wilkins was at his menacing best cutting out the Matamata players’ attacks.
The player of the day award went Petropolos.
The loss drops Te Awamutu into eighth spot among a tightly congested group of five teams jostling to finish the season in the top half of the 12 team league.
