Pupils visit Hinemoana
A group of students from Te Puke High School visited the Hinemoana voyaging waka recently.
They learnt about the immense knowledge that was required to successfully navigate across the Pacific ocean.
This aspect of Ma¯ori culture had been lost, but is now being revived.
Seven of the double-hulled waka now exist around the Pacific.
Students were shown around the boat and the labyrinth of bunks below the deck.
They also learnt about life on one of the waka’s voyages.
The Hinemoana runs eight day voyages for students.
Anybody interested in going on one of these, should contact Joe Anderson at Te Puke High School.
