Boat ramp issues

Te Puke Times - - NEWS -

Closure of the boat ramp at Ford Rd for two years is having an effect on other local boat ramps.

Maketu¯ Community Board Chairman Shane Beech told last week’s meeting the last community market coincided with nice weather and that meant a lot of boaties wanting to launch from Maketu¯ boat ramp.

Board member Gus Cantlon said there were also issues at the Bell Rd boat ramp.

He suggested building a jetty for boats to tie up while waiting to use the ramp rather than drifting midstream.

“It’s congested and people are getting angry,” he said.

“That would be a good improvement for Bell Rd because the [Ford Rd] boat ramp will be closed for two years.”

Cr Kevin Marsh suggested contacting Bay of Plenty Regional Council to see if money might be available for a jetty. THREE NEW MURALS

The Beach Rd toilets will be the first location for three new murals in Maketu¯.

The Community Board considered designs from one street artist for murals at the toilet, on the town’s information centre and on the water tank at the intersection of Awara and Bledisloe Park avenues.

The board agreed to go ahead with the mural on the toilet block and then seek the community’s views on murals in the other two locations and an evaluation of the suggestions put forward.
