Te Puke yet to get on board
Te Puke have yet to post any competition points in this season’s Baywide Cup.
Their clash with Greerton on Saturday ended in a loss with less than half the allotted overs used.
Greerton won the toss and were in some trouble with just 30-odd runs on the board for the loss of four wickets.
Skipper Shane Wineti steadied the ship before falling with 22 runs to his name. Batting at eight, Jared Tutty fought a rearguard action which saw him produce his team’s best batting performance of 24 runs.
Tutty produced a handy ninth-wicket stand, but Greerton were bowled out for just 120 in the 28th over. Brody Gilroy was the star of the Te Puke bowling attack, grabbing four top- and middle-order bowling scalps at a cost of 28 runs.
Dan Price was the only Te Puke batsman to show any real defiance with a hard-fought 24 as the visitors were bundled out for 66 in the 20th over. With the win, Greerton also retained the WBOP Challenge Trophy the Baker Cup.
The district’s other teams posted two wins and two losses on Saturday.
Defending Reserve Grade champions Te Puke made a winning start to their title defence after sitting out the opening round with a bye last weekend.
Aquinas College faced a very big target after Te Puke finished their 50 overs at 287/5. Hamish Wilde blasted the first Te Puke ton of the new season, belting an unbeaten 123. Wilde received plenty of support from Chris Rowe (46) and Scott Struiksma (35). Led by three wickets from Cam Murray, the defending titleholders removed Aquinas College for just 149 to take a solid 122-run win.
Papamoa Wanderers moved into the logjam at the top of the B Grade leaderboard, where six teams have two wins from the opening three encounters. Grasshoppers reached 154/5 in their allotted 40 overs, with the Papamoa side losing six wickets on their way to victory.
Albion ripped up their seasonstart formbook, where they had been rolled for 43 and 37 in their first two matches of the new campaign, when they gave Papamoa Tangaroa their first loss of the B Grade title race. Papamoa Tangaroa would have been smiling after scoring 202/8, with Matt Short reaching the 80s. However Albion were in grand touch in attaining the Tangaroa target with five wickets in hand.
PapaOMAs were set a daunting target of 295 by Cadets and the big target proved too much, with PapaOMAs bowled out for 140 to give Cadets their first win of the season.
