School concert band celebrates
The Kerikeri High School concert band are celebrating their ‘silver standard’ award from the National Concert Band Festival.
Students aged 11-16 played during a 20-minute slot at the three day festival held in Whangarei from August 3-5.
Junior music head of department and band co-ordinator Kathryn Thomson says the band achieved the silver standard - 10 bands were awarded gold, 10 awarded silver and 10 awarded bronze.
‘‘Some of the students have only been playing for six months. Proud would be a good word [to describe the feeling from the result].’’
The band, conducted by David Lawless, is a wind group with instruments including flutes, saxophones, clarinets, trumpets and supporting percussion with a xylophone and timpani.
‘‘The students practice a lot in their own time and practice together once a week, throughout the year,’’ Thomson says.
A full-day practice session was held during the school holidays in preparation for the festival.
The bands performing included four professional-level bands, around 15 schools and eight to nine community bands, Thomson says.
It was the band’s first time performing at the festival.
‘‘We weren’t aiming for anything so it was a lovely outcome, there were many happy smiles from the students when it was announced,’’ Thomson says.
Thomson says the concert band’s main performances each year are at the Kerikeri Christmas Parade and at the Kerikeri Anzac Day Dawn Ser- vice.
She says the students were going to be presented with certificates at assembly, so they could be acknowledged by their peers.
The Kerikeri High School concert band hopes to travel down to Wellington for next year’s festival, Thomson says.
The Whangarei event, at Forum North was the 30th Con- cert Bands Festival presented by the New Zealand Concert Bands Association.
The association aims to promote the knowledge and love of music, assist in furthering musical education and provide mentoring support for new bands.
Workshops were also held during the festival with the prizegiving held at Whangarei Girls High School.
