WILLOW-JEAN PRIME, LABOUR

The Bay Chronicle - - FRONT PAGE -

The statistics show two Northlanders are assaulted every single day and the number of assaults is rising. Those are only the reported cases. Kaikohe is now New Zealand’s most violent small town and Kaitaia is also in the top 10. A Northland District Court judge is finding about 90 per cent of the cases he hears involve drug addiction. This includes family violence offending and burglary cases to fund meth habits. Addiction, mental health, lack of jobs and low incomes are being blamed. Labour will increase the number of sworn police officers by 1000 over three years. I believe we need to take a prevention-first approach to crime. Labour will tackle the root causes of crime to reduce offending and make our communities safer.
