Whangarei and Northland appeared to be big winners in the election. With National winning both electorates, the Labour deputy leader winning Te Tai Tokerau, and locals Winston Peters, Shane Jones and WillowJean Prime all going to Parliament, the North is going to be well-represented in the House. The question now will be whether that representation can translate into positive change for the region. Will Winston Peters use some of his new-found kingmaker power to make the Northport rail project happen as he promised? Or has being slighted by Northland voters made him change his mind? Will he still be pushing for Auckland’s port to be relocated north? National will now realise waterways are a big issue for many - it’ll be interesting to see how they react. One thing was clear from the election night results - Labour’s strength is its Ma¯ori and Pasifika voters. They better start looking like it and start delivering for those constituents.
