Awards recognise sports stars
Kerikeri High School students have scooped major prizes at the ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Awards. Their sailing team claimed the team of the year title for the third consecutive year, while champion boxer Kyle Chen, was named Sportsman of the Year. The awards were held in Whangarei on October 26.
With a second placing at the NZ Secondary Schools team sailing event in April, which qualified them to represent NZ at the Interdoms event in Australia, the Kerikeri High School Sailing Team were deserving winners of the team award.
This year Paihia boxer Chen, claimed the NZ Golden Glove Middleweight Youth Champion, and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games. Swimmer Ciara Smith from Pompallier Catholic College in Whangarei won the Sportswoman of the Year. The NorthTec Area Schools Awards were won by Ilai Arona and Kalani Walters-Hewson from Kaitaia Abundant Life School for their NZ team selections at this year’s national area school tournament in Whangarei.
Code winners from the Far North included polocrosse competitors Damian Jobe (Okaihau College), Kyla Zielinski (Kaikohe Christian School), rodeo rider Tegan O’Callaghan (Kaitaia College), netballs’ Seroya Nankivell (Kaitaia College), Regan Corr (Okaihau College) for TaekwonDo.
