Awards recog­nise sports stars

Kerik­eri High School stu­dents have scooped ma­jor prizes at the ASB North­land Sec­ondary School Sports Awards. Their sail­ing team claimed the team of the year ti­tle for the third con­sec­u­tive year, while cham­pion boxer Kyle Chen, was named Sports­man of the Year. The awards were held in Whangarei on Oc­to­ber 26.

With a sec­ond plac­ing at the NZ Sec­ondary Schools team sail­ing event in April, which qual­i­fied them to rep­re­sent NZ at the In­ter­doms event in Aus­tralia, the Kerik­eri High School Sail­ing Team were de­serv­ing win­ners of the team award.

This year Pai­hia boxer Chen, claimed the NZ Golden Glove Mid­dleweight Youth Cham­pion, and a bronze medal at the Com­mon­wealth Youth Games. Swim­mer Ciara Smith from Pom­pal­lier Catholic Col­lege in Whangarei won the Sportswoman of the Year. The NorthTec Area Schools Awards were won by Ilai Arona and Kalani Wal­ters-Hew­son from Kaitaia Abun­dant Life School for their NZ team se­lec­tions at this year’s na­tional area school tour­na­ment in Whangarei.

Code win­ners from the Far North in­cluded polocrosse com­peti­tors Damian Jobe (Okai­hau Col­lege), Kyla Zielin­ski (Kaikohe Chris­tian School), rodeo rider Te­gan O’Cal­laghan (Kaitaia Col­lege), net­balls’ Seroya Nankiv­ell (Kaitaia Col­lege), Re­gan Corr (Okai­hau Col­lege) for Taek­wonDo.
