McLeod’s lager winning brew among craft beers

McLeod’s Brewery in Waipu was among several northern breweries who featured well in the 2017 Brewer Guild Awards.

The artisan brewery last month brought home one trophy, four gold medals and four bronzes. Their lager, British and pale ales scored the top results with the more traditional pilsner ’Longboard’ taking the trophy.

Brothers Geoff and Clayton Gwynne purchased the Pizza Barn in 2003, quickly putting their own fingerprints to the place including the name and menu, but found the beer lacking. Being big fans of craft beer from their travels abroad, they craved authentic brews so in 2014 launched themselves into the brewery business.

‘‘We now have a great ‘brew crew’ which includes head brewer Jason Bathgate who’s worked for two champion New Zealand breweries.and assistant brewer Milton Mewett,’’ says Geoff Gywnne.

Brewers Guild chair Jonathan Alve says Northland is beginning to stamp its brewing reputation in NZ with it craft beers.

Matakana’s Sawmill Brewery, with two Best in Class trophies and five gold medals, and Warkworth’s 8 Wired Brewery 19 medals, including two golds, added to the Northland prize haul.
