Alker qual­i­fies

New Zealand’s Steven Alker and Scot­land’s Colin Mont­gomerie have earned spots at next month’s Bri­tish Open at Royal Troon af­ter com­ing through fi­nal qual­i­fy­ing. Alker was at three­un­der par af­ter two rounds at Royal Cinque Ports yes­ter­day to fin­ish tied sec­ond and earn one of the three spots at the Deal qual­i­fier. Alker, who plays on the Tour in the US, had rounds of 68 and 71 to earn his fourth start at the Open and first ap­pear­ance since fin­ish­ing in the top 20 at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2012. The 53-year-old Mont­gomery shot a five-un­der­par ag­gre­gate af­ter 36 holes at Gailes Links to take the fi­nal spot af­ter an ag­o­nis­ing two-hour wait as he qual­i­fied with Swede Oskar Arvids­son and 23-year-old Spa­niard Scott Fer­nan­dez.
