Beware of the humans
I was rather ashamed of being human when I saw the article Proud dad defends girl’s first kill and pictures of an eight-year-old girl, encouraged by her father, taking a bite out of the still quivering heart of a deer that she had just shot ( August 25).
I can’t see anything to be proud of. It contrasts greatly with a scene that came through my email of a woman in Spain rushing into the arena of a bullfight to comfort the bull in the last few moments of its life after the torture of the bullfight.
I think that the compassion of the woman in Spain amidst human sadism stands out as of a high order of goodness and something to cultivate.
I’m putting up on the inside of my gate a notice: ‘Beware of the humans’. We need more such notices around the place.
I agree with Albert Schweitzer: ‘‘Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things humanity will not find peace ...’’
