Choose on merit

The Dominion Post - - Opinion -

Your item (The women who could be Lester’s deputy, March 29) on a potential deputy mayor fell short of proper analysis.

What is required of the position? The gender, race and age of a potential appointee should be irrelevant to the choice of a person with appropriate wisdom.

Why should Iona Pannett be bypassed by Jill Day? Has her ‘‘Green’’ allegiance contributed to the failure to date of transport planning in the city? Should she lose her portfolios?

Is kindergarten teaching an appropriate qualification for a key council position? The mayor owes the public an explanation about what is going on. MIKE WILLIAMS
