MFAT signs agree­ment on Pa­cific aid for new­borns

Unicef and the Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs and Trade have signed a $7 mil­lion agree­ment to sup­port the preven­tion and re­duc­tion of new­born mor­tal­ity in Kiri­bati, the Solomon Is­lands and Van­u­atu. The sign­ing cer­e­mony took place in Suva, Fiji, on Mon­day. Nearly 1700 chil­dren under five died in the Pa­cific in 2016. More than 80 per cent of those chil­dren died within their first year. The Gov­ern­ment has been clear on its in­ten­tions to pro­vide more devel­op­ment as­sis­tance to Pa­cific na­tions.
