Murder charge laid
A man has been charged with murder following the death of Auckland man Sosiua Helotu Ula in Porirua last month. A 31-year-old Porirua man appeared by an audio visual link from Rimutaka Prison in the Porirua District Court yesterday where he was further remanded in custody until an appearance in the High Court at Wellington on December 3. He was also charged with conspiring to supply methamphetamine. Judge Bill Hastings granted an application for interim name suppression to continue until his next appearance despite opposition from police. Police have previously said that Ula, 19, was found with critical injuries after falling from a Mercedes on Porirua’s Warspite Ave on October 7. His death two days later triggered a police homicide inquiry. Detective Senior Sergeant Christiaan Barnard said a total of three people now have court appearances.
