A favourite find
Sometimes a wardrobe workhorse can be hiding in an unexpected place.
I was at the St John Opportunity Shop on Ingestre Street, Whanganui, en route to look at a vase, when a set of shell buttons caught the light as I passed a clothing rack. I was supposed to be avoiding the clothes.
My wardrobe is pretty full, so I’m being stubbornly discerning when it comes to buying anything: I have to know that I’ll wear the item long-term, and that it will work with what I already own.
But shell buttons usually signal a shirt of a distinct and decent make. On closer inspection, a 100 per cent linen tag had me.
The fit is a little snug, which makes it ideal for layering under other clothes. I’ve surprised myself by wearing it almost non-stop, under my favourite roomy black linen jumpsuit. It also works under a really plain dress – it’s ideal for keeping the sun off my neck in strappy or low-backed clothes.
