New health centre for Hastings
A new health centre for Hastings is expected to be up and running by January 2019.
The Hastings Health Centre, a multi-million-dollar primary health centre, will be built on the corner of Aubyn Street and King Street.
Chief executive Andrew Lesperance said the new centre would be one of the most advanced primary care medical facilities in the country, offering urgent and after-hours care.
The new centre was expected to provide more doctors and nurses to cater to Hastings’ growing population.
It would also have a pharmacy and a laboratory, and other health services like radiology, audiology, physiotherapy and podiatry would be tenants.
‘‘This is a significant investment in primary health care in New Zealand and we are proud to see Hastings leading the way,’’ he said.
The centre’s chairman, Paul Messerschmidt said it would mean patients could see their family doctor, and get access to urgent medical care and specialist services.
The new Hastings Health Centre will be next to the existing Totara Health, and will share an access way with it. The $11.4 million dollar project to restore the Hawke’s Bay Opera House is six weeks in, and locals are invited to take a look at what’s been done, via a timelapse video.
So far contractors have removed the art deco stained glass doors from the front entrance and the first floor balcony, to make sure they stay safe until the strengthening is completed, Focus Project Management’s Herman Wismeyer said.
The tiles on the foyer floor have been removed and replacements ordered.
The old tiles were uneven and broken, Wismeyer said.
As part of the first stage of strengthening the unreinforced brick walls of the theatre and foyer, the public toilets in the foyer will also be fixed up.
The old ticket booth will be added into the women’s bathroom, and the men’s toilets will also get a facelift.
Hastings District Council has organised time lapse videos of the work to be uploaded to the council website monthly so residents can see how the project is going.
