Wellington came to a standstill on Tuesday - the America’s Cup parade rolled into town drawing thousands of people into the capital to support the victorious team. They waved and cheered, and the ticker tape littered the street.

But for those heading out of the city afterwards many faced an incredible delay to get home.

Just after noon a slip on the Ngauranga Gorge closed the three southbound lanes. Traffic backed up to Tawa and both on-ramps and off-ramps to Newlands and Johnsonville were closed. Overnight, crews worked to clear the slip and reopen two of the lanes for morning commuters.

Now we are in the midst of some freezing weather. Sleety rain and high winds are expected today and there is a weather warning for our region.

But it is winter and at least, on Tuesday, we had a beautiful, sunny day where we could applaud and cheer our heroes - the winners of the America’s Cup. Rug up and stay warm.
