Foxton Library is being relocated to a new community and culture centre, Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom.

The centre is opening on November 18 and it will house a community gallery, exhibition spaces and a public library, as well as the Ma¯ori and Dutch hubs.

The library will be closed from November 10 and will reopen along with Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom.

An opening ceremony for Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom will be held at 10am, followed by a festival at 12pm, which will include dance groups and food trucks.

Hannah Street, a member of the Friends of Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, said as a student she travelled to Levin to use the library as Foxton’s library was small.

‘‘Being in a small town, kids often get into trouble as there is nothing for them to do.

‘‘There were no holiday programmes being offered for children because of the size of the facility.’’

She was excited about the centre opening.

Horowhenua District Council chief executive David Clapperton said the facility was unlike any other in New Zealand.

‘‘We have combined services for local people and visitors to create a sustainable visitor attraction, which will deliver value to our community into the future.’’

It hasn’t been an easy road for the centre, though, which had funding issues just one month ago.

‘‘We have combined services for local people and visitors to create a sustainable visitor attraction, which will deliver value to our community into the future.’’

The $7.3 million community hub had a budget overspend.

In October, council strategic projects manager Cathy McCartney said heating, ventilation and airconditioning system estimates were below the actual quotes received.

This meant the project was over-budget by $200,000 and the council is applying for grants to cover the extra costs.
