Flow is not optimised

Mark Owen of the NZ Transport Agency has replied to my letter (May 5) pointing out that the Melling lights are not operated on a time basis but that they respond to the current traffic flow.

The east-west traffic moves on the phase immediately prior to the green light for Harbourview traffic.

I have lived in Harbourview for over 47 years.

Innumerable times I have waited to cross the intersection with the road clear to the eastern end of the bridge.

Just when you think that the green light will come on a car will a appear at the eastern end of the bridge and travel right across and turn right up SH2.

The traffic flow that I see is not being optimised.

Perhaps the system needs recalibrating.

Mr Owen should get out his oil can and his screwdriver and fix it.
