Metco Engineering lifted a little of the gloom surrounding manufacturing when it was named supreme winner of the Wellington Region Business Excellence Awards in Upper Hutt.

The Lower Hutt firm’s path to overall business winner followed their taking the Manufacturing and Distribution title - one of four main categories on the night.

Metco general manager Mark O’Donnell was ‘‘pretty chuffed’’ with scooping the top award.

‘‘There are so many good stories in the Wellington region and it’s great to celebrate them,’’ he said.

The company employs 60 people making anything and everything from reinforcing washers to pizza ovens.

All products are designed, fabricated and finished in-house.

‘‘We’ve faced a fair amount of adversity in a pretty tough and competitive industry but we’ve continued to defy the odds and proven our worth,’’ RDL managing director Benji Sneddon said of the Trentham construction, demo-
