The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Geranium Bakery

-

John Milne’s an old hippie. He came to Whanganui nearly 30 years ago to join the

Ahu Ahu Ohu, a communal work scheme in a remote area on a tributary of the river. He and his wife Miranda stayed for 17 years. These days, they make bread and other baked goods under the label Geranium Bakery, which they sell at the River Traders Market. They make approximately 70-80 loaves a week including three types of sourdough, ciabatta, fruit loaves, plaits, croissants and “hot cross buns without crosses”.

John’s values remain the same as when he joined the Ohu. He and a group of friends have just bought a plot of land where they will build 10 houses. He’s also campaigning to rid Whanganui of plastic bags and sells cloth bags made by prison inmates (“we call them inside out bags”). (06) 343 3060.
