The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Balclutha Golf Club

-

This is the go-to club if it’s 18-hole golf you’re after. Proud of its reputation as one of the most social clubs in the country, visitors are assured of a warm welcome anytime – make sure to put your green fee in the honesty box if there’s no one around – but particularly on club days, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. While the course isn’t particularly long by modern standards, at just over 5000m it’s no easy walk in the park. Expect to be challenged by the undulating nature of the course, the tightness of some of the fairways and the position of the greens. Accuracy is key and it’s particularly important to get your second shot bang on. Players are required to hit a full shot to the greens, to rely on a lucky bounce would very likely be… unlucky! There’s a no-carts policy in place and clubs can be hired from the Balclutha Information Centre. Green fees: $20. 23 Golfers Drive, Balclutha. (03) 418 2171, balcluthagolfclub.com
