Up to 30 Ste­wart Is­land dogs and their own­ers at­tended a course teach­ing the dogs to avoid kiwi. Dogs are the big­gest killer of adult kiwi and two re­cent kiwi deaths on Ste­wart Is­land were caused by un­con­trolled dogs. Ear­lier this month a dog owner was sen­tenced after a mas­tiff cross dog killed a brown kiwi on the is­land. South­land Dis­trict Coun­cil an­i­mal con­trol of­fi­cer Julie Gil­lan said there was a ranger on the is­land, but Po­lice and other mem­bers of the com­mu­nity as­sisted the coun­cil in dog con­trol du­ties.
