Melissa Aitken doesn’t want any family in Southland to go without in 2017.

She is calling for businesses and individuals to donate services for an event to help Southlanders in need.

The event, called Haircuts and Other Services For Those in Need, will run at Fernworth Primary School hall at 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, January 29.

This is the third time the event will be hosted in Southland, after it was held twice in 2016.

Aitken, the organiser, said she hoped the event would become a permanent biannual event.

‘‘It can’t stop now.’’

When the event started in January last year, about 150 people in need showed up.

‘‘That number has doubled. We are now expecting about 400 people.’’

Aitken is making a public appeal for hairdressers, massage therapists and other businesses or individuals to donate their skills and services on the day.

‘‘There are a lot of people in Southland that benefit from this event and need our help.’’

Theyneed 10 more hairdressers to put their names down for the event to be able to manage the demand for services on the day.

The event isn’t just about haircuts, Aitken said.

‘‘Any services people can donate are appreciated – from nurses, dentists to beauty therapists.

‘‘Last year we had high school students doing people’s nails. It was great.’’

There were some families and individuals that relied on services offered at the event, Aitken said.

‘‘You hear some people’s stories and you just know there is a need for this event.

‘‘Last time we had people turn up who hadn’t had a haircut in more than seven years. We had parents and grandparents that were going without basic things so their children or grandchildren didn’t miss out.’’

Aitken is also collecting food, clothes and non-perishable items to give out on the day.

On the top of the priority list are sanitary products, toothpaste, deodorant, lice treatments and clothes.

‘‘Anything people can spare will help.’’

If you or your business have services or goods to donate to Haircuts and Other Services For Those in Need, call Melissa Aitken on 0275333600.
