FROM THE NEWS DESK

The Invercargill Eye - - FRONT PAGE -

The wait is over, the decision made. I look forward to seeing what the new government will mean for the people in Invercargill and wider Southland. I have spoken to several people in the city who welcomed the change, though the final results (see pages 4&5) suggest the coalition will not be universally welcomed in the south.

I (almost) heard the news driving through winding Southland roads towards Queenstown. The radio was cutting in and out, adding to the suspense and excitement of it all.

I heard Winston’s voice announcing ... ‘‘The NZ First coalition will be with ...’’

The radio cut out.

No!! Who? What? How? It sporadically cut in and out with snippets of shock, cheering and political chat until I gave up and dialled (hands free of course) my partner. ‘‘Oh my god did you hear the news?’’ he answered.

It will be a big change for our country. Like anything, you can never please everyone, but I am looking forward to seeing what the future will bring.
