Cross-country was always my thing at school.

My dad claims I got it from him, but I loved running and being involved in sports, even heading to zones and regionals for several years.

This was until I got ‘‘too cool’’ of course.

But for some youngsters it was not always fun, so this week it was good to see Southland Girls’ High School turn athletics into a fun Rainbow Run.

There were smiles all around and it was great to see participation in ‘‘cross-country’’ on the rise at the school.

It was my first time being at a colour run so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I think it is a great idea.

The rain added the extra challenge for runners, but made for some great photos, and was perhaps cooling for the runners after their 3km haul.

I wish my school did this when I was a student, but for those of us who missed out, make sure you head along to the ASB Colour Rush on Sunday at Teretonga Park.
