Expressing his love for NZ
He’s been refining his style and producing work overseas, now Southland artist Danny (Deow) Owen is returning home to showcase it all at an expedition in Riverton.
The old Bank of New Zealand building on the main street of Riverton is being turned into a pop up gallery and will be showcasing works of artists.
Deow is the opening artist at the new Vault Gallery, opening tonight. His work will be on display until Sunday.
He has been working on 22 paintings and a few surf boards for the show.
Deow, who now lives in California but often returns home, has been refining his art in the past few years, he said.
He works on huge murals, outdoor and street art pieces, as well as paintings of all sizes.
Lately he has been exploring his style and method of painting, with his latest multimedia works using spray paint, brushes and markers.
His up and down journey of ‘‘self discovery’’ and refining his art will be brought together for the exhibition, he said.
‘‘It’s the evolution of everything wrapped up in a nice little native bird.’’
His top selling works, in New Zealand and overseas, are of native New Zealand birds, he said.
‘‘It’s good really, to express my love for New Zealand.’’
He believed street art was ‘‘finally being accepted’’ and was growing throughout the country.
‘‘It’s a new era, times have changed now.’’
The exhibition will be his first show since South Made in Queenstown and his first in Riverton since A Balance of Options in 2009.
The value of his paintings were increasingly going up, from $200 a few years ago to about $1000 or more for the same size now.
‘‘You’re buying a segment of my life.’’
Gallery owner Sean Woodward said the series of exhibitions from Southland artists would not only support local artists, but also the Riverton social scene.
‘‘It’s an opportunity to add something different to the art and culture scene.’’
Artists including Christopher Flavell, Health Sellars and Greg McDonald will also showcase works, he said.
In two weeks Deow will showcase works in Auckland at the Bradley Lane event.
