Comedy is coming to Nelson College, thanks to the school’s four-man theatre sports team, the First XV, a student social media expert and a Westie from Auckland.

This Saturday the school hall will be the venue for a night to remember featuring a theatre sports challenge, an open mic stand up comedy competition and a performance by well-known West Auckland comedian Ewen Gilmour.

the event will go towards a range of extra curricular activities including the Theatre Sports team, and improvements to the hall’s PA system.

The college’s top rugby side has adopted the event as its cause for the term and members are using their contacts to drum up ticket sales. Student ‘‘social media consultant’’ Rees Vinsen has set up a Facebook page and has designed flyers to tell the public about the event.

Comedy at the College is also being run in conjunction with The Truck and aspiring comedians are encouraged to enter the open mic contest. Prizes are an iPod Touch or a $350 Apple voucher.

Duos are welcome and contestants need to entertain the audience for only two to five minutes.

Food and drinks will be available to buy and Nayland College and Nelson College for Girls have been invited to enter the theatre sports challenge.

Nelson College’s Theatre Sports team is Nick McLoughlin, Sean Young, Calum Turner and Jake Danson. Nick said the theatre sports segment would feature lots of audience participation, inclu- ding a game called Radio Play in which members of the audience come up with sound effects.

Sean thinks it will be a good night out.

‘‘Come for the lols and to have a good time,’’ he said.

Nelson College director of community relations Mark Vinsen said all the college boarders would attend. The show would be aimed at the under-18s but everyone was welcome.

Ewen, complete with his classic long straggly Westie hair, tattoos, goatee beard and wicked grin, will be judging the comedy contest and perform for about 45 minutes.

‘‘He is going to try and tone it down but he won’t,’’ Mark said matter-of-factly.

The evening will start with theatre sports followed by the stand-up comedy contest and then Ewen’s performance.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the Nelson College Finance Office. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
