The 700 hectare site now has 14.4km of pest proof fencing surrounding it in an effort to make the sanctuary pest free.

Brook Sanctuary board chairman Dave Butler said he was very grateful for everyone who has supported the effort.

‘‘I was always confident that today would come, even during the most challenging days.’’

‘‘It represents a wonderful team effort by trust volunteers, staff, members, advisers and of course, the public.’’

Butler said the next phases of the project include the development of the visitors attraction and the repopulation of the site with rare species lost from the region, particularly birds.

A party to acknowledge the milestone fence will be held at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary on September 29 from 11:30am to 2pm and everyone is welcome.

Brook Sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd said the event would be a fun day of celebration for the whole family.
