Fijian flyer grabs chance with Tasman United

James Hoyt has been knocking on the door of the Stirling Sports Premiership for a number of years and now that he’s got an opportunity with Tasman United, he told reporter that international football was the next target.

- This is your first season in the Stirling Sports Premiership so how did the opportunity with Tasman United come about? You have played for some of the biggest winter clubs in the country like Central United and Wairarapa United but it must be good to fin

Previous to Wairarapa United I was playing for Central united in Auckland, it just so happened that I met Paul Ifill up in Auckland before winter season kicked off and he sort of mentioned to me that a move to Wairarapa could help me branch out to a national league team.

So coincidently Tasman coach Richard Anderson was watching one of our games in Wellington where he had a chat with me after and yeah here I am at Tasman United.

It’s great to finally get a run in the national league, I’ve always wanted to play at this level and experience football in a better competition. Playing against the likes of Auckland City is definitely a highlight for me because they’re one of the best domestic teams in the country. Our home crowd is brilliant and Trafalgar Park is quickly becoming one of my favourite places to play in New Zealand. Getting on the scoresheet at home was an amazing feeling because the atmosphere is so good at the home games, I hope there’s more goals for me at Trafalgar.

It would again be another step up from the national league level so it only means I’ll improve as a player, if the opportunity presents itself I would be more than happy to represent Fiji.

Yeah I believe there definitely could be more Fijian players playing at a professional level. Roy is a great example of someone who has come abroad from Fiji and taken all the right pathways to earn his professional contract. He’s not only set a standard for Fijians but all small island nations. I just think as an individual you’ve got to have the right mindset and be willing to work hard towards your goal.

Family is very important to me so whatever time I do get away from football I spend with them.

I usually get to Nelson on a Thursday or Friday so it still gives me two-three training sessions before we play so it’s not too bad, in saying that we have a great bunch of boys down here at Tasman who are very close both on and off the pitch. The good team chemistry makes it easy for me to come in and do my part for the team.

I am very confident the team will come out stronger from the game on the weekend because we haven’t got the reward we deserve for our training and preparation.

A lot of work is done behind the scenes to prepare the team for game day so I think it’s time we put in some good performances not only for ourselves but our supporters and staff. The next two games are important for us and could define our season so we’re going to come out firing next two games.
