New role a change of scenery for Nick
From making arrests to helping travellers enjoy their rest, Nelson’s Nick Kempthorne is loving his new office – the great outdoors.
After 10 years in the police, the former constable made the decision to leave the force in December, in favour of a new career as a tour guide.
‘‘I needed to do something different for me and my family and so a change was in order,’’ he said.
‘‘I was sitting around with some friends and thinking what would I be good at, what would I enjoy? That was important, [police work] was a reasonably well-paid job, so if I was going to leave that I’d better make sure it was something I’d enjoy ... and we settled on this.’’
As a result, Deluxe Tours New Zealand was established by Kempthorne and fellow director Ray Campbell.
Based in the top of the south, but now with a wider scope after taking on Christchurch tour company 5 Days, the company offers organised or bespoke tour options ranging from fish and game excursions, adventure activities to wine or artisan tours.
‘‘The idea is organising end to end tours for them – we’d take care of all the accommodation, activities so people can just turn up and go,’’ Kempthorne said.
‘‘I’ve always been keen on exploring the outdoors – we holiday a lot in Golden Bay and every time we’re over there we make a point of going to find something new to do and it’s never let us down – there’s plenty out there and it’s just a matter of getting out and doing it ... putting the walking shoes on.’’
Although tapping into the international traveller market is the long-term aim, Kempthorne held realistic goals for his first summer season.
‘‘I’m not expecting that it’s going to be flat out busy so we’d looking to do a lot of things locally with locals, doing things like wine trails and day tours– people that might have family coming into town and that might want to do some tiki touring.’’
Kempthorne said the change of pace has allowed the stress levels to subside, while also providing some more time to spend with his young family.
However, he conceded there had been some challenges along the way in establishing his new enterprise.
‘‘I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy walk-in, but I didn’t anticipate what you actually need to properly set up .’’
Kempthorne said there had been some early interest and the company’s website was now live at www.deluxetoursnz.com.
Kempthorne has started up a Tour Guide business in Nelson to cater for the luxury market.
