Fashion talents used to transform trash

The Leader (Tasman) - - OUT & ABOUT - CAROLINE BUDGE

There was a feast of creativity and positive ageing on show recently at Age Concern Nelson Tasman’s annual celebration of International Day of Older Persons.

Marked on October 1st every year, this is a day to stop and consider the contributions that older people play in society and this year was no exception.

We organised and ran a Fun Fashion Show with afternoon tea, entertainment from barbershop quartet The Hemispheres, plus a display of creative recycling from a group of talented women who all live at Summerset in the Sun retirement village.

Called Waste to Waist, they had used old materials – including felt, plastic bags, gift wrap, CDS – to create wonderful, bright and unique outfits, which they modelled to over 160 people.

This year’s IDOP theme was about tapping into the talents, contributions and participation of older people in society . . . and that’s something we know there is no shortage of locally.

It was a great afternoon to showcase older people being creative and having fun.

In other news Age Concern is continuing its work on the AgeConnect initiative, which is all about creating more socialising opportunities and better connected communities for our older people.

A new coordinator will be starting in a dedicated role in early November to help steer words into action, and implement

‘‘It was a great afternoon to showcase older people being creative and having fun. ’’

low-cost and no-cost solutions to people feeling isolated or lonely.

We have also been working with both Nelson and Tasman councils as they work on creating long term plans and strategies for the ageing population in the wider region – informing them of the kinds of issues we see with regularly and how we can all work together to create an agefriendly Nelson Tasman.

Rest assured, many agencies and individuals are very busy behind the scenes on ensuring we are a connected, vibrant and responsive community in which older people are supported and valued.
