An important link for Hawke’s Bay’s cycle paths opened this month. The clip-on cycleway on the Chesterhope Bridge along Pakowhai Road opened on February 2.
The project required extra planning as a lightweight solution was needed due to the bridge’s length and age.
Lightweight plastic fibre from Australia was used for the path, which sits on a steel frame attached to the bridge.
The material has a life expectance of 50 years and cost $2.2 million, with NZTA funding 61 per cent of that.
