LAURENCE DAY

The Napier Mail - - WHAT’S ON -

Conservative Party

Voters of Napier, your voice matters.

I am standing to help raise the profile of the Conservative Party. This is a nationwide election and your party vote determines our future. Currently your MP and political party talk to you very nicely once every three years. They tell you what they think you want to hear and bribe you (with your own money!) to vote for them. Then they ‘‘throw their ears away’’ and basically ignore you for the next three years.

For example, how could our politicians IGNORE these referenda? Sale of State Assets, 67 per cent said NO. Criminalising Light Smacking, 87 per cent said NO. Increase Penalties for Violent Crime, 92 per cent said YES. Reducing MPs from 120 to 99, 91 per cent said YES.

These are not fringe issues. Both National and Labour have blatantly ignored the wishes of the majority. Is it surprising that politicians are so despised? The Conservative Party would change that and ensure that Citizens Initiated Referenda become binding with 66 per cent of the vote. The threshold to call a referendum is high, so frivolous referenda would not be a problem. Frankly, I trust the voice of New Zealanders over 61/120 parliamentarians any day.

Time to listen to the majority. Party vote Conservative.
