Lost in space

-

Something about space flight makes MPs giddy with excitement. This week Parliament debated the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Bill, creating the rules to launch satellites from New Zealand, as proposed by Rocket Lab at Mahia. All seemed to want to take credit, and diminish the work of other MPs. In particular, Labour’s David Clark quoted much of Elton John’s Rocket Man in rebuking National’s Steven Joyce. Green MP Gareth Hughes enthused about the technology, not mentioning that one of his colleagues led the charge against Rocket Lab’s efforts to start up in Canterbury, arguing among other things that it would disturb the wildlife. Perhaps the Mahia wildlife has a stronger constitution.
