Base for aircraft misguided

-

I see the Government is going to buy P-8A aircraft to replace the aging Orions. This is good news but what is not good in my opinion is the ridiculous decision to base them at Ohakea rather than where there are houses nearby because they may carry torpedoes. Just how often will these aircraft be armed? If they need to be armed then surely we are in an armed conflict and have more to worry about than the unlikely crash on our houses. Incoming missiles pose a bigger problem.

Base the aircraft and the families at Whenuapai with all its facilities, education and work, have the aircraft at Ohakea for the few times they will need to be so armed, and save a few millions while about it. Norm Empson, Tauranga.
