Two Moerewa men, aged 26 and 18, were arrested last week after a police chase in which the offenders threw chainsaws, hammers and clothing out of their vehicle’s windows.

The chase began near Kaeo just after 10am on Wednesday when an officer attempted to pull over a van after reports that its occupants had been acting suspiciously.

The driver refused to stop, leading police on a 30-minute chase along mostly unsealed Waiare and Puketi roads, the passenger throwing objects including two chainsaws, hammers, sundry other tools and items of clothing out a window.

Police set up road spikes at various locations but caught the pair when the van spun out and crashed at the intersection of Puketi Rd and State Highway 1, near Okaihau.

The arresting officer, Senior Sergeant Pat Davis, confirmed that items were thrown from the van, “one of more of which may have been a chainsaw.”

At last report police were still investigating where various items found in the van and on the road had come from, Senior Sergeant Davis saying they were following strong leads.
