TRL Mini Mods prove pop­u­lar

The Taitok­erau Rugby League or­gan­i­sa­tion has con­tin­ued its ef­forts to de­velop the 13-man game at age grade level across the Far North by run­ning a se­ries of mini mod­ules dur­ing Term 4.

TRL Mini Mod events are be­ing held on the Kaitaia Col­lege top fields on Thurs­days af­ter school for those aged 4-13, and Satur­day morn­ings from 10am for ages 14-18.

TRL spokes­woman Jade Wikit­era said the Thurs­day af­ter­noon ses­sions have been aver­ag­ing about 40 par­tic­i­pants each night with the kids put through var­i­ous drills and skills ses­sions.

The six-week se­ries will be wrapped up with TRL se­lect­ing sev­eral rep teams to play in the Clash of the Ti­tans com­pe­ti­tion against their Nga­puhi coun­ter­parts on Satur­day, Novem­ber 4.

Or­gan­is­ers will also be look­ing to cap­i­talise on the mo­men­tum gained this year by run­ning an­other weekly pro­gramme in Term 1 in 2019.

The ul­ti­mate goal is to get a sus­tain­able youth league tour­na­ment up and run­ning across the dif­fer­ent age grades in the not-too dis­tant fu­ture.
