Hail in Hawke’s Bay

The Orchardist - - News -

The hailstorm affected the Flaxmere, Twyford growing areas before heading toward Clive and Haumoana. Not all growers had hail insurance, and this will add to the total area affected by the storm.

Hawke's Bay Fruitgrowers' Association president Lesley Wilson says some orchards in the Flaxmere area have been written off, while others have suffered cut leaves and 40 – 50 per cent damage.

Growers are assessing the damage, and planning how to thin their hail affected blocks to recover as much crop as possible. Lesley says the damage varies within orchards, and varieties.

A night-time hailstorm which hit Hawke’s Bay orchardists on November 13, has resulted in 750 hectares of hail-insured apples being assessed for damage.
