Bring on the avocado show

The avocado has been the golden child of popular culture for the past few years, with the fruit dominating media and restaurant menus alike. But an entire café dedicated to the fruit? Well, that’s something new.

Amsterdam is well known for some of its cafés, but this one may take you by surprise. An avocado café opened last month in Amsterdam. And yes, an avocado café is just what it sounds like; a café dedicated to selling nothing but avocados.

The Avocado Show is located in the well-known hipster district of the city, De Pijp, and is likely to thrive among a culture of niches and fads. It’s not a stretch to say that avocados are the favourite fruit of the internet and the Millennial generation, so a trendy district is certainly the way to go for a chic new business, clearly aiming at a younger crowd seeking innovation. What do they serve? Well, there’s avocado fries, smoothies, salads, burgers, and even the ambrosia of the millennials, avocado on toast. Sweet or savoury, there’s something for everybody… As long as you like avocados. Owners Julien Zaal, Rob Simpson, and Jaimie van Heije expect a great opening, and are unlikely to be disappointed; The Avocado Show has almost 40,000 Facebook fans before it’s even open. Will it succeed? Probably. Will it succeed long-term? Only time will tell. While they’re the first of their kind in the Netherlands, and Europe in general, avocado bars have proved popular in the US for the past few years, and are still going strong. A decade ago they would have been laughed out of every city in the world, but with the sun still shining on avos, it looks like The Avocado Show might run for the foreseeable future. The Avocado Show can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
