What’s jew

Here at McGrath Nurseries, we have commenced this season’s despatch; lifting is on time, and the ground conditions are good. We are committed to providing our customers with excellent quality trees and being innovative with our despatch processes.

We understand the hardship that fruit tree growers in the South Island have had as a result of the recent earthquakes; with getting fruit to market and the huge increase in transport cost due to the closure of the Kaikoura coastal road. We would like to assist these growers by easing some of this financial burden, so McGrath Nurseries will be paying $1,000 toward the cost of each Vowles truck travelling to Central Otago and Timaru from our Nursery this season.

Every year we strive to improve our systems and find better and more efficient ways to deliver your trees safely from our nursery to your orchard.

We continue to hone and improve our shipping processes. We are using GPS tracking of trucks enabling accurate delivery times; temperature monitoring and continuing our mulching system which worked so well last year. We use a fine spray of cellulose mulch that will better protect and keep hydrated the fine roots on your trees. This should improve establishment of the trees once they are planted in the orchard. We have also moved to a solid floored pallet this year, so there is no water ponding on a plastic floor. This should give improved handling of pallets in the orchard. Watering will need to be adjusted for this fact, if you are storing trees in our shipping pallets for any duration greater than a week. This applies to apples only, as our recommendation is to store cherry trees upright, in bins of sawdust or heeled in, not in shipping pallets. See our website for guidelines on the care of your new trees, including storage and planting.

For a second year, we have had John Wilton, BAgSc (Hort), FNZSHS, the Horticultural Consultant from AGfirst in Hastings, inspect our cherry trees for blast. We are able to provide confidence to our growers that our trees will arrive in good health.

Note as we are almost sold out for 2018, we suggest that you place an order for your 2019 requirements as soon as possible.

We thank you for your continued support.
