President’s Trophy Brent Wilcox
Pukekohe Vegetable Growers Association president Brent Wilcox was awarded the President’s Trophy at the Horticulture Conference last month.
Brent is principle of A S Wilcox and Sons, a fourth generation owned and operated family company.
In presenting the trophy Hort NZ president Julian Raine said Brent was being honoured for his outstanding leadership and mentoring, balanced with with his role in one of the most successful vegetable businesses in New Zealand.
He said Brent could lay claim to growing the next generation of leaders. The past three winners of the Young Vegetable Grower of the Year Award have come from the Wilcox company, including Brent’s son Andrew this year. “This impressive record is testament to Brent as he fosters and grows these people,” Julian said.
He said Brent encourages even younger people with support for initiatives with local high schools to give students an understanding of what’s on offer for them should they choose a career in horticulture.
As president of the PVGA Brent has advocated for growers on key land and water access issues. Julian said he is a natural collaborator and sees the value of a united front of product groups and rural advocacy bodies on the big issues, such as resource management applications, urban sprawl and access to water.
The President’s Trophy comes with a $4,000 personal development fund donated by the NZ Fruitgrowers Charitable Trust.
