The Orchardist - - Careers -

Business manager Karen Orr shares her role between TomatoesNZ and vegetables.co.nz.

She comes to us from Ixom (formerly Orica Chemicals), where she managed a team of seven in the manufacturing space. After 12 years there, much of which was spent travelling, Karen decided that settling down

in a more stationary role was the right choice, both for herself and her family.

“It got to be a bit much,” says Karen. “But now I’m based in Wellington, I can just hop on the train to get to work instead of travelling all over the country. And there’s still that same variety; being split between two groups is great for this. Plus I get a lot of opportunity to work autonomously, which I really enjoy. There’s a lot less pressure here.”

Karen thinks the change of industry has done her good.

“The chemical industry isn’t as bad as everyone thinks it is, but it’s still refreshing to be promoting an undisputable healthy industry. The PR is much more straightforward; it’s not that it’s easier, really, just a nice change.”

Karen is living the healthy lifestyle she champions; currently training for a trail run, she loves being outdoors, and is teaching her two sons (10 and 12) to love it too.

“I always try to challenge myself, but they’re not as good with adventure as I am.Taking yourself out of your comfort zone is part of living, and I’m trying to instill that in the kids; might take a while!”
