Very few lenses have re­ceived a re­sponse linked to the level of ex­cite­ment that ac­com­pa­nies the name ‘Otus’. But with over 125 years of op­ti­cal and me­chan­i­cal ex­cel­lence from Zeiss, the hype as­so­ci­ated with its an­nounce­ment was well founded. To add cre­dence to the ex­pen­sive price tag — ap­prox­i­mately dou­ble that of prime lenses at equiv­a­lent fo­cal lengths — the Zeiss Otus range of lenses was cre­ated with one sin­gle thought in mind: to achieve un­com­pro­mis­ing im­age qual­ity.

In this pur­suit to achieve per­fec­tion in op­ti­cal per­for­mance with the Otus range, Zeiss set the new bench­mark for prime lenses. Com­pris­ing 28mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.4, and 85mm f/1.4 fo­cal lengths, and avail­able in both Canon and Nikon mount, the three Otus lenses stand out for their su­perb im­age qual­ity. Ca­pa­ble of re­pro­duc­ing the finest de­tails and tex­tures in stun­ning clar­ity, the 28mm boasts a com­plex Distagon de­sign, while the 55mm and 85mm fea­ture Zeiss’s fa­mous sym­met­ri­cal Pla­nar — al­low­ing for a wide max­i­mum aper­ture of f/1.4, and en­sur­ing ex­cel­lent per­for­mance in low light. With this stel­lar prime line-up, spe­cial glass el­e­ments pro­vide apoc­hro­matic cor­rec­tions against un­wanted op­ti­cal ar­ti­facts, while a very flat plane of fo­cus en­sures sharp­ness across the en­tire im­age plane, in­clud­ing all four ex­treme full-frame cor­ners.

As man­ual-fo­cus lenses, the Otus range of­fers pho­tog­ra­phers the con­trol nec­es­sary for com­posed por­trait and prod­uct shots, as well as the free­dom to com­pose their sub­jects, with­out a mo­ment lost to any ques­tion of qual­ity.
