New site for heli games
The 2014 World Heli Challenge, always previously held in Wanaka, is coming to the Mackenzie Country later this year. It will be held on Mt Cook and the Ohau skifield over nine days in September.
Teams consist of two skiers or snowboarders, a photographer and a filmographer.
Event founder and director Tony Harrington says he believes the Mackenzie Country is one of the best areas in the world for this competition.
‘‘I love Mt Cook, I have been dreaming about taking it there for years,’’ he says.
Harrington says fewer athletes will be involved but as a result the competition will be ‘‘a little bit more elite’’.
He believes the footage taken will also showcase Twizel and Lake Tekapo.
Teams have been invited to make two- to three-minute edited videos in a bid to earn places in the challenge.
From those short films, two teams will be selected. The winning team will win $10,000.
Harrington says this year’s theme is ‘‘big adventure, big rewards’’ and organisers will be looking for films that capture this.
