People are talking about Perth – foodies, sunlovers, creatives, adventurers. No wonder they’re talking, with the capital city undergoing a rapid transformation.

It’s sparking curiosity among those who haven’t been, or who haven’t visited in a while.

Perth has always offered locals and visitors a beautiful natural environment – the Swan River, blue skies (it is Australia’s sunniest capital city), clean air, 19 metropolitan beaches where swimming, snorkelling and surfing abound, one of the world’s largest inner city parks, a quality wine region that is Western Australia’s oldest, and a port city – but most recently, the attention has turned to the city’s urban offering.

In early 2016, Perth’s multimillion dollar waterfront development Elizabeth Quay officially opened to the public. It accommodates relaxed riverside wining and dining options, pedestrian and cyclists’ bridge, promenades, public art, island playground, event spaces and the Barrack Street Jetty.

Perth has also welcomed the arrival of a new ‘‘neighbourhood’’ – Cathedral Square. Comprising the Perth Town Hall, the new City of Perth library, St Georges Cathedral, and its centrepiece – the State Buildings – a wining, dining and retail precinct housed in 140-year old heritage buildings, right in the central business district. The precinct is home to COMO The Treasury, which to date, has been regarded as the best new ‘‘city hotel’’ in Australia.

A billion-dollar upgrade of Perth Airport is also well underway and represents the first stage towards having all commercial air services in Perth operating from one convenient location within the next 10 years. Passengers will be able to transfer seamlessly between regional, interstate and international services.

Opening to the public in 2018, the new Perth Stadium will form a permanent city centrepiece as one of the major international sporting venues in Australia. The stadium will have a total capacity of 60,000 seats and the fit-out will be equivalent to world’s best practice.

Air New Zealand flies twiceweekly non-stop from Christchurch to Perth from December 10, 2016, to April 29, 2017. This will be the first time a 787-9 Dreamliner will operate from the South Island. Air New Zealand’s in-flight product ‘‘Seats to Suit’’ means you can choose how you want to travel. Choices include Seat, Seat+Bag, The Works, Economy Skycouch™, Premium Economy and Business Premier™.
