Sipping in the sun
There’s nothing quite like a good drop under the sun – and there’s no better place to enjoy it than Perth, home to some of the finest vineyards in Australia.
Hang out among the vines in WA’s oldest wine region, the Swan Valley (it’s been awineproducing region for 180 years) located a 25-minute drive from Perth city. Here you can meet the makers at some of the small family wineries or sample some of the wines that grace the top restaurants in Perth city. There’s also fresh produce, microbreweries and galleries galore on the Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail.
If you’re chasing the best coffee, Fremantle’s cappuccino strip has you covered, with a number of cafes specialising in local organic coffee beans. Here in this historic port town you can take in the best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape and yesteryear ambience as you feast on the vibrant flavours. You can also sample some local brews at the micro-breweries, including the popular Little Creatures down on the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. The lanes and alleyways of Perth city have experienced a cultural awakening, with a growing small bar scene making a big impression. Perched above the lanes and alleyways is a rich selection of rooftop bars; and if you’re here on a balmy evening, you’ll see that there is no better place to be.
For the best spot to take in views of the Swan River and the city skyline, Wildflower is a favourite spot for a pre-dinner drink, located on the rooftop of the State Buildings. The excellent wine list is a major drawcard, as is its carefully curated selection of classic cocktails. Head downstairs to Halford, which takes a contemporary twist on the 1950s late night lounge bar. For those who like a bit of spice, the master of Thai cooking David Thompson has opened a Perth outpost of Long Chim (the first in Australia) in the basement of the State Buildings.
Located three hours south of Perth is the Margaret River wine region. The world-renowned region is home to more than 220 wine producers and 100 cellar doors, and produces more than 25% of Australia’s premium wine.
