Christmas at Downton

If it’s mid-January in New Zealand, it must be time for the Downton Abbey Christmas Special (Sunday, 8.35pm, Prime), which aired in Britain on Christmas Day. But don’t be fooled by the season: The show is set in September 1921.

The main plot concerns a visit by Lord and Lady Grantham to a grand house in the Scottish Highlands. Meanwhile, most of the rest of the cast stays behind at Downton, ‘‘thus providing a double helping of lavish country estate photography for people who like that kind of thing,’’ according to The Observer television critic Andrew Anthony.

More importantly, there’s a significant death. Fear not, there are no spoilers in this story. Suffice it to say that fans shouldn’t search the internet too closely if they want to be shocked and dismayed.
