Educating boys with boys

Medbury School is the only independent preparatory boys’ school in Christchurch, offering an education for both dayboys and boarders from Years 1 to 8.

New entrants are offered a transition-to-school programme, which introduces many classroom activities that boys will encounter when they start school. This also enables them to move seamlessly from pre-school to primary school, enjoying a supportive and nurturing learning environment.

Medbury offers a traditional education, encompassing the Medbury values of manners and respect.

While they place a high value on the boys’ literacy and numeracy skills, they also help them to develop personal attributes.

In the Junior School, the foundations are laid for a broad and balanced education. Small classes and personalised learning programmes ensure that every boy has the support he needs to discover and develop his particular strengths. Headmaster Peter Kay believes that boys need physical activity, competition, regular playtimes, hands-on activities, clear structure, boundaries and expectations. ‘‘Our passion at Medbury is to unlock the potential of every boy. It is why we exist – to understand each boy’s opportunities and challenges, then personalise an education that brings out the very best he can be,’’ he says.
